Gordon Brown Used Influence In Cannabis Reclassification

On Monday former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown unexpectedly volunteered some interesting information to the Leveson Inquiry, pertaining to his role in cannabis law changes. Brown suggested he personally put weight on other cabinet members to push for cannabis to be reclassified as a more dangerous Class B substance, as opposed to the previous Class C status, which regarded it as a somewhat lesser offence.

Given what we know about how the government treats experts like Professor David Nutt, it’s yet another nail in the coffin of reasoned policy making. It’s quite staggering that in this day and age politicians believe they know better than everyone. While politics may be an art, we need to ensure we embrace science where good science already exists. Such important issues shouldn’t be open to the personal whim or influence of somebody with no background in science, who’s speaking from his heart rather than his head.
